15 Feb Freelance Life
A question that I get asked often from non-musician folks that I meet is about my life as a freelance musician/teacher. It’s a very different way of living compared to people in the corporate world or any job that has W2s! The grass is always greener as they say, right? It would be nice to have a steady income. It would be nice to have health insurance provided and other benefits. There are numerous positives to being in that world. BUT! Of course there are always downsides. The upside to being a freelance artist is FREEdom. My schedule is completely open and loose if I want it to be. I make my own hours. I take the gigs I want to play. I teach according to my availability. I put together sessions with other musicians (adult play dates as I call them) when I have new music I want to be played. And just being a musician and composer, I can sit around all day and practice and write music that I love. And sometimes get paid for it. I don’t make the most money in the world ever, but I’m doing okay. I think one of the biggest downsides to the freelance life though falls on the promotional aspect of things. No one ever tells you that not only do you have to spend time honing your craft, but now, in this day and age, you have to be a social media wiz, and be very astute and slick about getting your name out there. The question arises a lot when booking gigs about how many followers you have on Instagram or Twitter. Ha! This is turning into a rant about something else now! My point is that no one is working in the PR department of the company I work for except ME. Anyone want a job being my agent?
